In recent years, Google has also committed to impressively long software support windows (up to seven years for the latest models), ensuring the phones stay up-to-date and secure for longer.
- Evolving Hardware: While early Pixels used Qualcomm Snapdragon processors, the launch of the Pixel 6 series in 2021 introduced the Google Tensor chip. This custom silicon is specifically designed to power Google’s AI features directly on the device, enhancing performance for machine learning tasks. Pixel designs have also evolved, often featuring distinctive elements like the rear camera bar and a focus on premium materials and feel.
A Pixel for (Almost) Everyone
Recognizing that not everyone needs or wants a flagship-priced phone, Google introduced the “a” series starting with the Pixel 3a in 2019. These phones aim to deliver the core Pixel experience, particularly the excellent camera and software features, at a more accessible price point. More recently, Google has even entered the foldable market with the Pixel Fold.
